Is This The Greatest Speech Ever Made?
When I talk about the greatest speech ever made, no I’m not talking about my “We Need Change” speech which I released last week, but if you haven’t watched it yet I encourage you to do so and I hope you’ll share it so more people will see it.
There are many great speeches in history:
Martin Luther King Jr’s “I Have A Dream”
John F. Kennedy’s “Ask Not What Your Country Can Do For You”
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “The Only Thing We Have To Fear Is Fear Itself”
We just don’t have leaders making speeches like those anymore.
But I believe the greatest speech ever made was spoken by a comedian who was known for being silent. That comedian was Charlie Chaplin and the speech was from his film “The Great Dictator”.
Chaplin is one of my favourite directors and “The Great Dictator” is one of my favourite films so I really recommend you watch the film someday, but if you just want to watch the speech here it is on Youtube.
For context to understand how the story leads up to the speech, Chaplin plays two characters in the movie - a dictator named Adenoid Hynkel and a Jewish barber who ends up getting mixed up with the dictator and taking his place. As the film comes to the finale, the barber makes a stirring speech to the people.
It is a speech that is still so relevant 80 years later. It’s perhaps more relevant now than ever, and needs to be heard by everyone.
Do you have a favourite speech from a historical leader or a movie?
I agree that that Chaplin's speech is the greatest speech ever made but from the not so distant past, I feel that Jack Layton's letter to Canadians had similar impact and importance.
